My First Trip to ‘Rubyfruit Jungle’
  + stars: | 2023-11-20 | by ( Trish Bendix | Scott Heller | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The precocious and fearless protagonist of Rita Mae Brown’s 1973 novel “Rubyfruit Jungle” has served as a model of possibility for generations of young women, lesbians and outsiders of all kinds. Both of its time and ahead of it, “Rubyfruit Jungle” has inspired countless lives, works of art and Sapphic-themed spaces. Maybe just the first one toward whom I was evenly split between wanting and wanting to be — a category that only grew over time, and included heartthrobs of all genders. I read “Rubyfruit” over and over, starting around 11 or 12, still a couple of years out from my first kiss with a girl. I, too, wanted to hitch to New York where the other artists were, where the other queers lived.

The novel is existential or, more appropriately, elemental: Earth, air, fire and water — these are Bosco’s instruments along with the passions, fears and fantasies each of them evokes. The result is a strange kind of gothic romance about the human attempt to reach a real peace with wildness and wilderness without pacifying them, subduing them, paving them over. It is a more modest undertaking than “Malicroix,” yet full of small beauties, like a multifaceted gem. A grove of poplars is described like this: “Bunched tightly together against the daylight, their leaves formed a dark hedge. Some grew up almost from the level of the water in the shallower pools.

If you buy an I bond before Oct. 28, you will lock in the 9.62% interest rate for six months. How to buy I bonds I bonds can only be bought on the government website, TreasuryDirect.com , which has been recently updated . "If you are going to need it in the next year or two, that is a great interest rate you can make." However, a diversified bond portfolio will likely provide the same results over the long term, she added. Another thing to think about is how much you are holding in I bonds, McLoughlin said.
A striking dockworker on a picket line outside the Port of Liverpool during a strike in Liverpool, UK, on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022. The shop stewards who represent union workers accepted Peel Ports request for a meeting at the union office on Tuesday. Supply chain impact from second round of U.K. strikesThe latest development comes amid mounting labor issues linked to inflation at U.K. ports, with workers at the nation's largest port, Felixstowe, beginning another strike this week after one in August. "Unite made it clear that until they have reached their goals these waves of strikes will continue which will have a massive impact on the Christmas business and supply." The CNBC Supply Chain Heat Map shows the present situation at the ports.
The dockworkers at Felixstowe, the largest port in the UK, have started an eight-day strike in protest over their wages and inflation, overlapping with an ongoing strike at Port of Liverpool. Together, the two port strikes threaten imports and exports across industries —much bound for the U.S. — during a critical ramp up in the holiday shipping season. The combined value of weekly trade that moves out of the ports of Felixstowe and Liverpool, according to MDS Transmodal, is nearly $7 billion. The Port said in a statement Tuesday that it was "very disappointed that Unite has announced this further strike action. "This time, it's more likely that supply chains will be under pressure and trade could be affected by the overlapping Liverpool strike," warned Brazil.

Cormac McCarthy's Venomous Fiction
  + stars: | 1992-04-19 | by ( Richard B. Woodward | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
Finished off with one of his twinkly-eyed laughs, this mealtime anecdote has a more jocular tone than McCarthy's venomous fiction, but the same elements are there. Each of his five previous novels has been marked by intense natural observation, a kind of morbid realism. A cult figure with a reputation as a writer's writer, especially in the South and in England, McCarthy has sometimes been compared with Joyce and Faulkner. Says the historian and novelist Shelby Foote: "McCarthy is the one writer younger than myself who has excited me. I told the MacArthur people that he would be honoring them as much as they were honoring him."
